Freelance employment rise as firms become used to remote working


Demand for freelance occupations is on the rise as companies get progressively used to the virtual work environment and remote working, and some also look cut fixed worker costs post the Covid-19 outbreak.

Flexing It, a gig platform for freelance and project-based work said there was a 75% spike in the number of freelance positions reported in April, while HR technology solutions firm PeopleStrong estimates that 25-30% of the workforce in sectors, for example, internet business organizations, IT, ITE, new companies, hospitality, quick-service restaurants (QSR), retail and logistics will get changed over to freelance jobs over some undefined time frame.

Top freelance skills in demand incorporate data analytics, cloud computing, business planning, market section technique, SAP implementation specialist, data engineering, product manager, advanced digital marketing, brand tactician, and market surveying.

Professional services firm EY had a year back launched a gig platform called GigNow, where specialized experts can apply for project-based assignments.

Gig employees assist companies in responding to dynamic market needs. "As the demand for skilled talent goes up and organizations embrace new and more advanced methods of working, this business model and the gig economy is probably going to see a rise in the coming years," said Sunit Sinha, managing director, strategy and consulting - talent and organization, Accenture in India.
